While time travel is still far from becoming a reality, fashion design has the unique ability to transgress the passage of time, as ably demonstrated by a talented group of 22 PJ College of Art and Design (PJCAD) students who revisited the fashion of the 70’s.

Being born more than two decades later was clearly no obstacle in the quest to revisit the best of the era where Abba reined, and Disco’s first became popular; resulting in the emergence of A-Line Dresses, Bell-bottom Flares and jackets with details and tassels.

Armed with innovation, creativity and determination, the group of students presented a total of 22 retro-vintage designs at the 70’s Revival – Awe Sooky Sooky 2009 Fashion Show, which was held at MardiGras in One Utama. An eclectic mix of styles, each demonstrating unique interpretations of the 70’s hottest looks, were presented at the fashion show.

Following PJCAD students’ highly successful New Zone Fashion Show in October, where they took the audience on a journey laced with 18th century European, Peranakan and quirky Japanese styles, the students have now delved into an exciting decade that immortalized John Travolta in Staying Alive and Saturday Night Fever, and spawned a new genre of dance.

The 70’s was also the decade that truly empowered women, and this was expressed in the hedonistic mix of styles and colors, as well as varied hem lines in the evening’s collection.

Commenting on the various designs on display, David Liew, Chief Executive of PJCAD said that the fashion creations reflects the maturity of PJCAD’s budding designers and their ability to lead the fashion scene with innovation and styles to make an indelible mark in the Malaysian and international fashion arenas.

“At PJCAD, we teach our young designers to think outside the box and consistently apply the 3Es of art and design (expose, explore and experiment). Through this pedagogic method, they learn to maximise on the objective and subjective aspects of designing through visual judgment,” he stressed.

He added that this method ensures that students will have a firm foundation in research, design methodology and practical skills in drawing, communications and fashion design.

PJCAD is a member of the INTI Education Group, which in turn is a part of Laureate International Universities – the world’s largest global education network. Students considering PJCAD will not only benefit from the 23 years of experience and strong track-record that INTI offers, but also gain from the global synergy and resources that Laureate provides. Laureate is present in 23 countries, and serves more than 500,000 students globally.
