An individual who started off with an investment in one university - and within a period of 10 years creates a community of more than 50 education institutions networked across continents – is bound to draw attention when he speaks.

Recounting his personal journey of being a teenager who worked in a hospital research lab to his present position as the Chairman and CEO of the world’s largest and fastest growing private education network, Douglas Becker of Laureate Education, Inc. captivated the students at INTI International University with his eloquence and clear sense of purpose and direction.

Becker believes setting a clear direction for his team and embracing social responsibility are vital for success

“As a Chief Executive, the most important responsibilities are: setting a very clear direction and making sure everybody knows it; having a great team and attracting great people who believe in what you’re doing; and allocating resources – people and financial resources – in the most thoughtful way,” said Becker, who was a special guest in INTI’s Business Leadership Series, which seeks to help the institution’s 14,000 strong student community engage with the industry in myriad ways in addition to having real time dialogues and debates on topical issues.

“One of the things that is very important for me is ‘strategic profit.’ What we do is not just about making money. We invest in a lot of things such as medical schools and clinics that don’t make any money at all, but for what it does for our reputation and our image of being trustworthy. By having a sense of purpose which is a higher calling, and by having a sense of mission which is to say social responsibility, we can in the end actually be financially profitable but we don’t get there by focusing on making money,” he added.

Graham Doxey, CEO of Laureate Malaysia and Deputy CEO of INTI Education Group said: “Students who have attended our Business Leadership Series would have met, heard from and been instructed by the top minds and thought leaders in the country and region. We have a commitment to our students that we will set them apart from their peers and we believe we can do so by giving them access to these captains of industry.”

Doxey added that the series was part of INTI’s Enrolment to Employment (E2E) initiative to bring industry into the classroom and help shape students into becoming more employable upon graduation. In addition to speakers from the industry, adjunct professors from across the Laureate network will also be making regular visits to INTI campuses whereby students can expect to see world-renowned names as part of their faculty.

“I’m really delighted to be a part of the Business Leadership Series. I’ve had the chance to come to Malaysia and to INTI many times. It was at INTI where I gained a lot of advice and insight as I was working on my plan to create a global network of universities,” Becker commented.

Following the hour long session that was attended by several hundred students at INTI International University, Becker had a round-table dialogue with several top students, where he was quizzed on matters ranging from entrepreneurship to social responsibility. Students of the INTI Education Group benefit not only from the years of experience and strong track-record that INTI offers, but also gain from the global synergy and resources that Laureate International Universities provides. INTI is part of Laureate, the world’s largest private education network with a presence in 24 countries, with more than 50 accredited campus-based and online universities and 130 campuses, serving 600,000 students globally.

The Tan Yew Sing Bursary 2010 is the latest financial award offered by the INTI Education Group, in addition to the RM 4.6 million in scholarships that has already been awarded to deserving students this year.

With the award, bright but financially constrained Malaysian students may receive up to 70% course fee waiver for their programme of study at institutions of the INTI Group. The bursary is applicable to qualified students who enrol for the August/September intake this year.

The launch of the Tan Yew Sing Bursary, named after the CEO and Co-founder of the INTI Education Group, took place at INTI International College Penang in the presence of YAB Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang, Dato’ Lam Wu Chong, Chairman of Penang Chinese Town Hall and Mr. Tan himself.

INTI’s latest financial award is named after Tan Yew Sing, CEO and Co-founder of the INTI Education Group.

“Since the early 90’s, INTI has given out more than RM 80 million worth of scholarships to students. We have been consistent in awarding scholarships to deserving students as we firmly believe that education is a great enabler that can help empower students,” said Tan.

Close to 2,000 INTI students have already benefitted from the numerous scholarships awarded up until June this year. The INTI Education Group offers a range of scholarships and awards for deserving students to help fulfill their dream of acquiring world-class education.

The INTI-Laureate Merit Award is a scholarship for students with outstanding academic performance while those with strong leadership qualities and have been active in serving their schools and community can apply for the INTI X-Cellence Scholarship. INTI also provides aid to students who excel in sports under the INTI Sports Excellence Award. The INTI Chairman Award, for qualified Bumiputra students; the INTI Community Award, to encourage students from selected townships across Malaysia to pursue their tertiary studies; and the Mid-Year Scholarship are recent additions to the list.

The scholarships are part of INTI Education Group’s commitment to higher education in Malaysia under the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). Established in 2005 as a project of the nonpartisan William J. Clinton Foundation, CGI convenes global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Since announcing its commitment at the CGI Asia meeting in Hong Kong in 2008, INTI has greatly broadened its scholarship commitment by including more levels and areas of study.

INTI enjoys the benefits of being part of a global network as a result of the synergy with Laureate International Universities – the world’s leading provider of private international education serving 600,000 students – which has opened the resources of a global education entity for Malaysian students.

INTI International University (INTI) and IBM Malaysia are set to change the higher education landscape in Malaysia, following a synergistic alliance, leveraging IBM’s Software Career Training (SCT) Program. This alliance makes INTI, the first private university in Malaysia to become an IBM Education Partner. With this collaboration, students enrolled in master’s degree programs at INTI, will be able to gain access to a wealth of resources, leading edge technologies, industry best practices and business solutions.

The agreement that was signed between the INTI Education Group and IBM Malaysia is part of INTI’s brand promise to bring industry know-how into the classroom for its students. The IBM Software Career Training (SCT) Program is a comprehensive software education program, designed by IBM IT Practitioners, to help graduates and experienced IT professionals stay up-to-date in this dynamic IT industry.

The SCT Program provides a blended learning approach, integrating classroom, hands-on lab exercises and team projects to provide both theoretical and practical training to solve real-world problems.

It will help to produce effective curriculum aligned with IT jobs requirement – the curriculum brings together the latest software content, strong technical foundation, real-world industry experience, hands-on lab courses and best practices, all into a single unique education program. It is built based on matching the skills and knowledge required to a particular job role in the industry.

The SCT curriculum offers the latest IBM software content and best practices to keep attendees ahead of technology trends, a top-class faculty of technical consultants, field veterans and education experts, and a semester-based format to build technical foundation and widen skill specialties quickly.

“We are embarking to make the world smarter and one way of doing so is by exposing students to tomorrow’s technologies today and sharing best practices through IBM’s Software Career Training (SCT) Program, empowering the students by preparing them to join workforce once they graduate,” said Mr Ramanathan Sathiamutty, Managing Director of IBM Malaysia.

Ramanathan (left) exchanges signing documents with Doxey while Ng Wan Peng, COO of MDeC looks on.

He elaborated that the curriculum will give students the flexibility to be trained in various technologies, helping them stay versatile and relevant in the IT industry and be immediately productive in a specific job role. With the trainings aligned with the broad spectrum of skills requirement of a job role, the students will be able to immediately work on assigned tasks.

“This extends our aim of helping to nurture the next generation of talent in the country, in line with some of the key thrusts of the 10th Malaysia Plan – to develop the nation’s talent pool and help transform to a high-income economy through specialization, which will ultimately help propel the country into the next level of growth,” said Ramanathan.

IBM’s SCT Program will equip master’s degree programs students at INTI with knowledge and understanding of IT infrastructures such as Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) and the latest technologies from IBM’s suite of software offerings. As IBM will be sharing training guides and curriculum with INTI, this will contribute to producing master’s degree graduates who will be highly sought after in the IT industry. They will acquire a high quality and recognized Malaysian qualification from INTI as well as an international IBM professional certification, which gives them an immediate edge in the job market.

“INTI’s partnership with IBM is part of our Enrolment to Employment (E2E) initiative to bring ‘industry into the classroom’ and help shape our students into becoming more employable upon graduation,” said Mr Graham Doxey, CEO of Laureate Malaysia and Deputy CEO of INTI Education Group.

“We have a commitment to our students that we will set them apart from their peers. One of the ways we do this is by giving them access to resources such as the SCT Program offers to accelerate their skills and knowledge, along with the latest software content, technical foundation, industry experience, hands-on courses and best practices offered by IBM,” he said.

INTI is rapidly reinventing itself to offer courses that are highly relevant. By tapping on the resources of its industry partners and the Laureate International Universities network – the world’s largest private education network which it is part of – INTI is able to ensure that it develops courses that are not only relevant but also in demand.

A ‘5-star’ institution that is ranked among the top 2% of universities in the world* is now the exclusive Australian education provider for the INTI Education Group.

The University of Wollongong (UOW), regarded as being at the pinnacle of higher education in Australia, prides itself on its enviable record of achievement in teaching and research and retains five-star successes in six key categories in the Australian Good Universities Guide 2010. These are in Getting a Job, Positive Graduate Outcomes, Graduate Starting Salary, Research Intensity, Generic Skills and Graduate Satisfaction.

5-star quality comes with higher education provided by UOW

UOW provides INTI the intellectual property associated with its existing academic programmes as well as the quality assurance processes to ensure educational integrity of delivery and outcomes consistent with its on-shore standards. Students can look forward to quality degree studies in Commerce, IT, Computer Science and Communication & Media Studies that can be fully completed at INTI.

The graduation certificate is conferred by UOW and bears the name University of Wollongong. As the courses delivered at INTI are identical in content to those at UOW in Australia, students can also choose to transfer at the end of any semester to continue their studies at UOW in Wollongong.

“INTI has developed benchmarking partnerships with some of the biggest and most renowned names in higher education around the world today,” said Mr Graham Doxey, CEO of Laureate Malaysia and Deputy CEO of INTI Education Group. “UOW’s willingness to be a partner is testament to the high standards of education which form the foundation of INTI.”

INTI’s UOW degree programme students can choose to complete their studies at INTI or in Australia

INTI, which is part of the Laureate International Universities network, that has a presence in 23 countries with more than 43 accredited universities, has even more to offer its students with this global synergy. INTI students do not only benefit from global resources and articulation programmes but also from increased lecturer and student mobility.

Since becoming part of the Laureate network – the world’s largest and fastest growing private education group, INTI has introduced a number of firsts in Malaysia including the Semester Abroad Programme (SAP) which allows INTI students to study for a full semester at a Laureate institution of their choice while paying local fees. This will be a distinct advantage for INTI’s UOW students who will be able to gain international experience while completing the greater part of their course at INTI.

Other distinct advantages stemming from this synergy include the Laureate Visiting Fellows programme which entails top names from around the world conducting lectures monthly and the Business Leadership Series (BLS) which sees top names from the industry speaking at INTI.

It takes a very special kind of person to be an Actuary – the job that the Wall Street Journal ranked No. 1 on its ‘Top 50 Best Jobs’ list for 2010, after Mathematicians. This was determined based on five criteria inherent to every job: environment, income, employment outlook, physical demands and stress, according to recent studies released by job site CareerCast.com.

“It goes without saying that an innate gift for numbers is fundamental for those seeking a career in actuarial science,” says Khor Kheng Leik, dean of INTI Subang’s American Degree Transfer Program (AUP). “This gift is best accompanied by a deep passion for numbers, a meticulous nature as well as strong motivation, because the job involves constant number-crunching and there will be many exams to sit for during the years after graduation,” she adds. A strong grasp of economics and information technology is also vital. Ultimately, a professional actuary can become a Chartered Risk Analyst – one of the most highly-regarded and well paid jobs in the world.

From left) Foo, Koh and Yong are bound for the University of Waterloo, heart of the world’s largest co-op network.

Since the mid 1990s, INTI has been the top choice for students majoring in actuarial science through AUP, Malaysia’s most established American degree transfer programme for over two decades, which partners with some of the world’s leading institutions in this field such as Drake University, University of Central Oklahoma (UCO), University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Many of INTI’s actuarial science majors have also been accepted into universities such as Brown University, University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon University, Northwestern University and University of California, Berkeley.

AUP students may choose to pursue their actuarial science degrees in Canada at the University of Manitoba, University of New Brunswick, Acadia University, and University of Waterloo (UW). UW, recognized as “Canada’s most innovative university”, is also the heart of the world’s largest and most outstanding co-op network with over 3,500 employers. Former Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates, states, “Most years, we hire more students out of Waterloo than any university in the world.”

Of AUP’s over-400 strong student body, actuarial science majors represent a quarter of that number and some of the most exceptional students, says Khor.

19-year old Foo Le-May, one of four students transferring to the prestigious UW co-op program this fall, is a proud scholarship recipient of UW and won a medal as a top scorer for the university’s Euclid International Mathematics Contest held in April this year, which drew a worldwide participation of 13,324. As with her coursemates, Yong Kit Yew and Koh Kay Xin, who will be transferring with her to UW after four semesters, INTI was their college of choice after considering AUP’s actuarial science curriculum, partner universities, reputation and tuition fees. As for the North American university they will be transferring to, UW’s esteemed co-op program was the deciding factor.

While Yong, 19, knew he would pursue a career in actuarial science after visiting INTI’s booth at an education fair, Koh, also 19, considered this path for two years after first learning about actuarial science at 15 when she also spoke with INTI’s education counsellors. Since January, she has been interning at a Malaysian trading company, building on her coursework and gaining real-world experience before transferring to UW.

Students who wish to complete more credits at INTI will find the ideal choice in UCO’s 3+1 program, reveals Khor. “AUP offers the widest range of core courses that well prepares the student for his or her final year in the US, and qualifies the student for the one-year optional practical training (OPT) visa that allows him or her to work in the US. Of course, students may transfer before the three years if they so choose.”

At USD 17,000 a year in tuition fees and living expenses, UCO is also one of the most competitively priced. Students with outstanding academic performance are eligible for merit-based scholarships and financial aid ranging from USD 2,630 to USD 12,000 per year, by Drake University and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. INTI’s AUP currently offers three intakes – January, May and September – but will soon offer a fourth in March.

The INTI Education Group is a part of Laureate International Universities – the world’s largest private education network with a presence in over 23 countries, with more than 43 accredited universities and 130 campuses, serving 600,000 students globally.

In the highly competitive business environment, one should take heed that change is the only thing that is constant and with change comes opportunity. Being adaptable to change is thus seen as a great advantage and graduates who are versatile and able to settle in quickly in any environment are highly sought after by employers. By hiring an adaptable graduate, employers save valuable time and resources on training as their new hire is able to ‘plug and play.’

The Business Leadership Series, which links academia to industry via presentations by corporate leaders, forms an integral part of the learning experience at INTI.

This is where the advantages of an INTI qualification come in, in particular for those with a business degree, as students are also trained to develop soft skills that lead to strong leadership ability, confidence and the ability to analyse and strategise, in addition to being independent, decisive and resourceful.

“The popularity of the business and other courses at INTI is based on the strong emphasis on industry related needs,” said Graham Doxey, CEO of Laureate Malaysia and Deputy CEO of INTI Education Group. “We offer career-focused programmes that are designed to produce graduates who are highly employable and sought after in business and other fields by working closely with the employers to develop modules that are relevant based on their needs.”

INTI has in place a unique initiative called Enrolment to Employment (E2E) - a synergy with blue-chip companies including AIA, Deloitte, DiGi and Ricoh, among others, aimed at increasing the employability of every INTI graduate. E2E addresses critical market needs by tailoring courses together with the industry, which means that the curriculum and coursework activities at INTI are designed to be in tandem with the expectations of the industry, as well as being relevant to the market’s needs.

Among the many E2E initiatives to help students understand the complexities of the working world and have a pulse on the needs of employers is the Business Leadership Series, which has seen captains of industry such as Ramanathan Sathiamutty, Managing Director of IBM and Manoj Menon, Partner & Asia Pacific Managing Director of Frost & Sullivan speaking to students of INTI on the latest trends and developments in business and career opportunities on a global scale. By giving students access to the region’s top minds and facilitating communication in an open manner with these thought leaders, INTI sets its students ahead of their peers.

The business courses offered at INTI include Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Financial Planning, International Business, Management, Marketing and more. These are offered from Diploma to Masters level, and there are many pathways available. INTI’s franchise business degree programmes (3+0) are accredited by the MQA and recognised by JPA, and the Faculty of Business and Accountancy has produced more than 7,000 graduates who enjoy high employability and career advancements in the workplace.

“INTI is rapidly reinventing itself to offer courses that are highly relevant. By tapping on the resources of the Laureate International Universities network – the world’s largest private education network which it is part of - INTI is able to ensure that it develops courses that are not only relevant but also in demand,” said Doxey.

INTI students will also benefit from the synergy with the Laureate network, as there is increased student and lecturer mobility and the sharing of resources and best practices across the group’s network which spans 23 countries. Business students of INTI have had the opportunity to participate in international contests abroad. Competitions such as Rubicon run by the Business and Information Technology School (BiTS) in Germany offer priceless opportunities for the international exchange of business knowledge and ideas.

Any student of the INTI Education Group who has completed at least one year of study is also entitled to join the Semester Abroad Programme (SAP). The student will have the opportunity to study at any Laureate institution of his/her choice, for a full semester abroad, at the same tuition cost paid at INTI. There will be a selection process to select the interested students, as they will have to be matched with the receiving institution and the programmes.

The urgency to put a stop to human trafficking and raise public awareness on the issue that is plaguing many countries across the globe inspired some hundred INTI Education Group students to march against sexual exploitation of children and young people.

Students lend a hand in creating awareness and solidarity against a modern-day slave trade.

With placards, banners, balloons and enthusiasm that outshone the morning sun, the students lent their leg muscles and voices in support of the Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People campaign in Bukit Bintang organized by The Body Shop in partnership with ECPAT (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and the Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes), Tenaganita, PS the Children and NurSalam.

Students marching in unity against sexual exploitation of children and young people.

As they made their circuit of Jalan Bukit Bintang, beginning from Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, the marchers distributed leaflets and car stickers to hotel operators, taxi drivers and members of the public to create awareness and solidarity against sex trafficking of minors. In the procession was Mr Graham Doxey, CEO of Laureate Malaysia and Deputy CEO of INTI Education Group.

“INTI’s participation is one of our corporate social responsibility initiatives and reflects our stance against human trafficking,” said Mr Doxey. “Besides joining the march, we are here to support the ratification of the optional protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution as well as child pornography in Malaysia.”
According to recently published statistics, every year more than 1.8 million children and young people are trafficked around the world, making human trafficking the third-largest and fastest-growing criminal industry in the world.

Making an impact as a strong supporter of the campaign against sex trafficking of minors is the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), started by President Bill Clinton in 2005 to “help turn good intentions into real action and results.” Clinton is the Honorary Chancellor of Laureate International Universities, the world’s largest private education network which includes INTI Education Group. CGI has committed to work with The Body Shop and ECPAT on “Progress Cards” to evaluate state actions and policies regarding sex trafficking. These Progress Cards will analyze how at least 40 individual states in the USA are meeting their obligations to stop sex trafficking of children and young people using globally-agreed goals and indicators.

In Malaysia, members of the public are encouraged to go to any of The Body Shop stores or online at www.thebodyshop.com.my/stop to sign the Stop Sex Trafficking Petition for the ratification of the optional protocol.

The optional protocol is a new international legal instrument which has been created by the United Nations to complement the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) which will increase the level of protection of children against all forms of sexual exploitation. Malaysia is one of the remaining three countries in South East Asia that have yet to ratify this document.

True determination and courage to succeed characterized INTI Subang Diploma in Engineering students competing against degree-level contenders from Malaysian universities at the 1Malaysia Engineering Challenge Competition.

INTI Subang was represented by three teams of four members each. One team consisting of Brian Chow Voon Yang, Goh Yee Chern, Lim Kim Lean and Chang Li Ti made it to the finals and eventually third place in the competition organized by International Islamic University Malaysia.

(From left) Chang, Lim, Chow and Goh putting together robotic parts in the presence of a facilitator.

“The robotics challenge in Stage 2 was the most memorable for me as we were grappling with something we had sparse knowledge of,” said Chow. “Each team member specialized in one area - in AUTOCAD, workshop technology, circuit design or C++ programming – but we had to work as one against the clock and our competitors.”

The students felt that the entire experience opened their eyes and minds to wider knowledge and possibilities that they could apply in their degree studies in future. Competing against students of a higher education level was also quite an achievement in their books. Even participants who did not qualify for the finals felt the experience was very enriching.

“I would advise anyone to participate in challenges such as this,” said Sam Wei Quan, another INTI student in the competition. “They are usually fun and add to your knowledge and experience. Who knows, you might actually end up winning!”

“We believe in exposing our students to various means of experiential learning such as engineering competitions,” said Ismail Hj Mohd Jamil, Head of Programme for Diploma in Engineering in INTI Subang. “Competitions add value to their knowledge as well as their resume.”

Joyce Yuen, President of INTI Subang was proud of her students’ track record. “Many of our Diploma in Engineering students have gone on to leading universities such as the University of Leeds in the UK and University of New South Wales in Australia for further studies,” she said. “They have also successfully acquired UNSW’s Golden Jubilee Scholarship and other scholarships that paid their tuition fees partially or in full.”

The Diploma in Engineering programme at INTI Subang offers two majors: Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme covers a wide spectrum of courses which enable graduates to progress into the fields of electrical, electronic, computer and telecommunication engineering. It equips students with sound technical knowledge and practical skills to be competent engineering professionals.

The Diploma in Mechanical Engineering programme provides knowledge in fields as diverse as design of power generation systems, automobile design and manufacturing, refrigeration and air conditioning, aerospace technology and more. It provides students with sound technical knowledge and practical skills required of a mechanical engineer in any of the variety of roles within these essential industries.
